Introduction to creating your self-care regime!

Self-care seems to be the new buzz word at the moment.
Self care Sundays, #self-care, all In the name of self care, but self care can mean different things to different people.
They say that self care isn’t just bath-bombs and bubble baths but to some people it is.

To others self care is protecting yourself from toxic people that keep draining their energy. To others it’s simply saying NO to anything that doesn’t serve you. There are so many definitions of self care but personally I believe self care is making sure you nurture, respect and honour yourself by any means possible so that you can operate at your best.

It is vital that we stay charged up to be able to function fully.
Naturally we lose physical and emotional energy daily through work and basic human interactions. Like a battery we need to recharge what we have lost. You will never leave your house with your iPhone battery on 40% so why would you walk around feeling empty, lacking energy and not being fully charged up to operate throughout the day.


My view on self care is that I see myself as a cup. My talents enable me to be able to help people but what happens when I’ve poured out all my goodness to others? Self care isn’t new but its an act/ritual that many of us didn’t grow up intentionally doing for various reasons.
Yes, we get our hair and nails done but for some that is just maintenance not self-care. Self care is taking time to intentionally pour back into you and honour your temple, whilst protecting and persevering it.

We give so much of our time to others and often neglect ourselves in the process.Self care isn’t selfish but a means to survival taking a step back to pour into you is the only way you can continue to help others without draining yourself.
When did you last take time out and ask yourself do you care enough for you as your do for others?
Do you know when your tank is running dry and needs topping up?
Maybe not, and you know why, because we haven’t taken time out to become in tune with our bodies.
Do you have your survival kit ready?

Now is the time to make a change

I have listed 5 self care tips/actions you can start to incorporate into your life to kick start your self care journey and start teaching you how to carve out time for you and your temple.

1. Boundaries

Practice saying no
Make a declaration/promise to you.
Today I promise to say no to something that doesn’t serve me. I promise to only do things I enjoy and that make me happy.

2. Take a bath

Sounds normal but so many of use are used to rushing to get ready, why not put in your favourite bath bombs and light a candle. 3. Me time

Create time for you! This could be just setting an hour a week to do what ever you enjoy, that maybe reading, getting a manicure or pedicure, praying or journaling. Once you start the habit you will build discipline and strength in this area.

4. Self care box

A simple shoe box (or a fancy box decorated box) with all your favourite self care items in there, a journal, candle, bath salts, your favourite inspirational quotes. I personal like to also put a nice silk gown and pair of earrings in here too so I can really feel like a Goddess when I am having my me time!

5. Create a sacred space

An intimate space in your home where you can shut down from everything around you and be at peace. This can be anywhere, your bathroom, a spare room, or even a small corner that your retreat to.

Self-care Summer

While summer has a reputation for being a joyous time, it’s not uncommon to experience that summertime sadness. A great way to avoid this dip in your mental health is by regularly dedicating time to yourself. Even if you’ve already got a self-care routine in place, you may want to switch things up to keep it fresh and effective. Read on for some tips on how to devise your own self-care summer.

Get Your Hands Dirty

Drop the smartphone and put your hands to good use! The hotter temperatures and plentiful amounts of sun in summer months lend themselves well to gardening. So, consider starting a home garden or signing up to a community garden. Sometimes getting your hands dirty can help you see your problems from a different perspective or even forget about them altogether.

Pump Up the Jams

Spend an afternoon making a banging summer playlist.Your special summer playlist should help you feel good and think positively. Depending on your preferences, you can make a fun and dance playlist or even a chilled and soothing playlist. Listen to this playlist while you get ready, do housework or exercise. If it’s a great playlist, it will put you in a good mood for the whole day!

Go Out and Explore

Channel your inner Indiana Jones and find yourself some adventure. Getting out of the house to go for a hike or a stroll through the nearest park can help you feel better instantly. If your hometown has any special summer events on, why not give them a try? You can explore solo or with friends. The objective is to try new things and broaden your horizons.

Find Your Zen Moments

Regularly devoting time to your self-care can prevent you from burning out. Meditating in the morning or before bed may help you cultivate some inner peace. Lighting a scented candle and taking a bath at the end of a long day is another excellent way to decompress and recharge. If you are headed to the beach or pool, going for a long swim can also help you relax and find your zen.

Treat Yourself

Whether it’s buying a luxurious new face mask, a yummy gelato or tickets to a festival, remember that it’s okay to splash out now and then. If you can’t afford to splurge, there are other ways you can treat yourself. You can check out a new book from the library, pick yourself a lovely bouquet of wildflowers or try a new shade of nail varnish. All that matters is that you do something out of the ordinary to spark your joy.

ORIGINS

A small medium-sized tree, bay grows wild in the West Indies and Venezuela, where it is also cultivated. It is a sturdy evergreen shrub and tree family of the Myrtle family.

MOST COMMON USES

Good general tonic

Good for the hair

Helps to reduce fever

Help relieve muscle cramps and aches

Beneficial in improving appetite

Strong pulmonary antiseptic

Good for colds, influenza and bronchitis

Used to season stews, vegetables, pickles

Used in perfumery, also to aromatise Bay rum and other toiletries

Uplifts people who tend to be depressive or to lack stamina

ESSENTIAL OIL

Steam distillation of the leaves produces an oil that varies in colour from yellow to dark brown. It’s warm, pungent, spicy, medicinal, herbaceous aroma, fruity smell.

CAUTION

Bay oil has a high eugenol content and may irritate the skin and mucus membranes, AVOID DURING PREGNANCY.

3 TECHNIQUES FOR RELAXATION

Everyone deserves time to relax, you deserve it. You don’t need to to go to the spa, leisure centre or a retreat for relaxation. NaphtalyWorld will demonstrate ways in less than 20 minutes for stress-relieving.

1. Breathe in and breathe out

Take few minutes to focus on your breathing, sit up straight, put one hand on your belly, and close your eyes.

Breathe deeply, inhale slowly and exhale through your mouth.

Breathing deeply counters the effect of stress by slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure.

2. Meditate

When it comes to meditation, majority think it’s about chanting but really it is spending time in the moment and focus on your senses and you will feel less tense.

Your mind will be at ease and your brain can start stimulating.

Any of these repetitive actions such as painting, swimming, any activity that can swift your attention calm in the present.

3. Drink hot tea

There are several herbs that could give you the sedative effect you may need during hardships.

Most herbs should steep between 5 to 10 minutes, if you want to use fresh herbs, I’ll advise to put 3 tablespoons or if you are using dried herbs use 1 teaspoon with hot water.

There are a lot of tea, however I will state few that are good for relaxation.

Chamomile - Traditional herb favourite for its calming influence, it helps to decrease mild anxiety, it help soothe the stomach.

Green tea - Besides it’s high antioxidant content, green tea offers health and beauty. It helps you to relax as it contains theanine. Green tea does contain caffeine, you may want to try decaffeinate kind for relaxation.
